Tenure-Track Position in Sociology and Comparative Race and Ethnicity Studies
Reed College, Portland, OR
Deadline: October 1, 2025
The Department of Sociology and the Comparative Race and Ethnicity Studies Program invite applications for a tenure-track position beginning in the 2026–2027 academic year. We expect to make an appointment at the assistant professor level. We will consider more senior candidates.
We seek scholars with teaching and research interests in the sociology of Asian American or Latine groups in the United States, whose work is shaped by engagement with ethnic studies. Subfield specialties are open, including law and/or citizenship, immigration/migration, public policy, education, youth/adolescence, sociology of family and labor markets, urban and community. We seek applicants who are active researchers and are deeply committed to the education of academically-oriented undergraduates.
The new hire will teach a 3-2 course load. They will teach courses in the sociology of race and ethnicity (in their areas of expertise, rotating into our staff-taught Introduction to Sociology), and advise senior theses. They will also contribute interdisciplinary courses in Comparative Race and Ethnicity Studies (CRES) on a rotating basis with other members of the CRES program across a diverse range of fields and disciplines. These courses will include interdisciplinary core courses as well as courses in the faculty member’s areas of interest and expertise. The successful candidate will also contribute to the co-curricular activities and intellectual life of the Sociology Department and the CRES program at the college.
The ideal candidate must have a strong disciplinary background in sociology and be committed to research that advances the discipline. They must also have the ability and interest to connect their scholarly expertise with interdisciplinary and comparative race and ethnicity studies, broadly construed. A PhD is required by the time of appointment.
