UC Santa Barbara-Assistant Professor in Quantitative Methods in Educational Research

The Department of Education invites applicants for an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) whose scholarship focuses on the use of quantitative methods of research and analysis in Education, with expertise in one or more of the following areas: measurement (including approaches to test development, use, and validation, as well as the use of psychometric models), generalized linear modeling (including, e.g., multilevel and longitudinal modeling), and the use of a range of methodological approaches (e.g., AI/machine learning, Bayesian methods, causal inference, network analysis) in educational research. The successful applicant should also either have a substantive program of research that dovetails with their methodological interests or a demonstrated record of contributing to such research. The department is particularly interested in scholars with a strong focus on culturally sustaining and justice-oriented research methods, and whose research, teaching, and service is in line with the School’s mission to address pressing social justice issues through interdisciplinary collaborations with a focus on diversity and inclusion.

This faculty member would be expected to teach graduate-level quantitative methods courses including the department’s first-year introductory sequence on statistics and research methods and advanced courses in their area(s) of specialization. These courses should be designed so that they will be beneficial to graduate students in all three Program Areas of the department: (1) Culture, Language, and Human Development, (2) Learning, Teaching, and Teacher Education, and (3) Policy, Leadership, and Research Methods, as well as to those in the doctoral programs at the Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology.

The Gevirtz Graduate School of Education (GGSE) is part of UC Santa Barbara, a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), and located on the Pacific coast 90 miles north of Los Angeles.

The GGSE is a diverse institution in a diverse community in a richly diverse state. UCSB is a Minority Serving Institution (MSI) having been designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI). Despite focused efforts over the years, educational equity in California remains an elusive goal. As a public flagship institution, GGSE at UCSB is deeply committed to centering diversity in our work. In addition to finding faculty who bring scholarly expertise in the areas that are described below, we also want candidates for positions in GGSE to demonstrate how their scholarship, teaching, and service will help us achieve our mission to serve diverse populations in our region, state, and nation in ways that allow us to achieve educational equity.

The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service as appropriate to the position.
